Governor Anne Waiguru Speaks On Her Looming Arrest Over Corruption

Date:

Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has responded to reports that she will soon be arrested over corruptionĀ  in her county.

Waiguru condemned the intention to have her grilled over corruption while saying she does not understand why this would come just 48 hours after ditching Jubilee for United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

ā€œSurely, barely 48 hours after we decamped to UDA and now this. As a believer in the rule of law, this is really unfortunate,ā€ Waiguru said on her Facebook page.

She further said that the intention of her arrest is to discourage those planning to follow in her footsteps while at the same time blaming those who want to succeed her for her woes.

“Its intention is to dissuade those contemplating the same & an attempt at engineering succession politicsā€¦ it wont work. Kenyans are not stupid. And there is God in heaven,” Waiguru wrote.

Earlier on Kirinyaga county Women Representative Purity Ngirici told the governor to carry her own cross and should not blame UDA for her troubles.

Ngirici told Waiguru that her move to join UDA had nothing to do with the corruption allegations against her.

ā€œWhen anti graft agencies strike, donā€™t blame it on joining UDA. We have built the party from scratch,ā€ Ngirici said.

According to a report by the People Daily, Waiguru is likely to be charged alongside other county officials and members of the county assembly (MCAs) who accompanied her to William Rutoā€™s Karen residence on Tuesday.

Reports claim that as the governor was heading to UDA, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officials were concluding their investigationsĀ  into corruption allegations in Kirinyaga County Government, which could see her get arrested as early as next week.

Recently, Waiguru was grilled over the irregular payment of 52.8 million for a piece of land in South Ngiriama which she had earlier denied remitting funds to clear the payment.

She termed her summoning and the raids to her office as mere political witch-hunts after associating with the deputy president.

ā€œLast time I said ā€¦ ā€˜on BBI let me keep quiet a bitā€¦ā€™ immediately, EACC raided my officeā€¦Ā  Recently I said ā€˜ā€¦ introspecting on the political way forwardā€¦ā€™Ā  and again, immediately I get EACC summons, complete with all the subtle threatening inflexibilitiesā€¦ and media alerts on an alleged payment of 52m,ā€ Waiguru stated.
