Government Suspends Funding of Some Sports Activities

Non priority sporting activities and programs will not receive fundings from the national government.

In a letter seen by SonkoNews, the Ministry of Sports announced that the decision is to allow the government to cut on expenditure. 

Initially, the government was extending financial aid to sporting teams out on international assignments including friendly matches.

However, the favours will only be extended to teams heading out for crucial matches going forward as per the Ministry.

According to a communique from the state department, the move has been informed by the need by the government to cut down on non-priority expenditure.

“As you aware, the Government has directed the implementation of austerity measures geared towards reducing expenditure of public funds. All Government Ministries and Agencies have been directed to cut down on non-priority expenditure,” read part of the communique.

” In the view of the foregoing, we wish to notify that the Ministry had suspended funding of non-priority sports competitions/programs with immediate effect. Priority will only be given to teams with high probability chances of qualifying for Paris 2024 Olympics/Paralympics, World Championships, African Games 2023,East African Games, Hosting CECAFA 2023, CHAN 2025 and Afcon 2027 respectively, ” added the letter signed by Director of Sports Gerald Gitonga.
