Government Reduces ID Replacement Fee to Ksh1,000

Date:

Government through the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination on Tuesday, November 14 revoked a notice that had announced Ksh2,000 for national Identity card replacement.

In a new gazette notice, Kenyans will now be charged Ksh1,000 to replace IDs.

For new applicants, the Kenya Kwanza administration announced they would get a waiver without disclosing the exact amount. However, Digital Strategists reported that the new fee would be Ksh300 from Ksh1,000 which was initially proposed.

“The intended revised charges, fees and levies are informed by the need for Kenya’s self-reliance in financing the National Budget, to wean the Country from unsustainable debt that poses grave threats to our sovereignty and the dignity of future generations.

“The new intended charges, fees, and levies have been adjusted to accommodate views of the public already received following the publication of the revoked Gazette Notices,” read the notice in part.

Change of ID details will remain unchanged at Ksh1,000.

The new revised charges according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki are expected to be effected after public participation.

According to the notice, the public participation exercise is expected to end on December 10 before the new charges take effect from January 1, 2024.

The gazette notice further stipulated that the certification of current birth would be charged Ksh200 from Ksh50. The same fee will apply to certification of current death.

Late registration of birth certificate will now cost Ksh500 from Ksh150 and the same charges will apply to late registration of death.

Passports also raised concerns after the government hiked the fees. In the new gazette notice, ordinary passports with 34 pages will go up from Ksh4,500 to Ksh7,500 while 50 paged passports will cost Ksh9,500 from Ksh6,000.

The cost of acquiring diplomatic passports was doubled to Ksh15,000. Additionally, Kindiki announced that the replacement of a valid mutilated passport will now cost Ksh20,000 from Ksh10,000 while the replacement of a lost one will be Ksh20,000 from the current Ksh12,000.
