Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa is yet to be arrested after shooting dead an aide of his opponent, Brian Khaemba, on Tuesday evening at a polling station in the constituency.
Speaking to the press, Bungoma DCI boss said that the manhunt for him is still ongoing and he is believed to be in Uganda.
The detective said that they received a tipoff that Barasa was spotted on a motorcycle which he allegedly used to cross the border.
The lawmaker had been given 24 hours to surrender himself to the police after the 6.00pm incident that occurred at Chebukwabi polling station.
Khaemba, who was vying for the Kimilili parliamentary seat on a DAP-Kenya ticket, had gone to the station, with his aides, to witness the counting of votes. Barasa was also at the station. After a few minutes he opted to take his leave.
Barasa with his men however did not want them to leave the station. Khaemba’s driver defied their orders and proceeded to start the engine.
“After about three minutes, Mr. Brian Khaemba decided to leave the station and headed to his car Reg. No. KCR 050J where Hon. Didmus Barasa followed him in company of four men and ordered them not to allow him(Mr. Brian Khaemba) to leave the place but Mr Khaemba’s driver Joshua Nasokho defied the order and ignited the vehicle. Hon. Didmus Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Mr Khaemba’s aide namely Brian Olunga and shot him on the forehead where he profusely bled,” part of the police report read.
Barasa is said to have escaped after the incident. Olunga met his death while receiving treatment at Kimilili subcounty hospital.
