In what looked like either take it or leave it, it has now emerged that the former Ikolomani member of parliament Boni Khalwale did not have an option with regards to the Kakamega gubernatorial race.
A source within the Kenya Kwanza coalition hinted to Sonko News that Boniface Khalwale was put between a rock and a hard place.
Being as broke as a church mouse, Mr. Khalwale was put to task to explain how he would deliver the Kakamega seat to the Kenya kwanza team and which finances would he use to campaign.
Infact, the bullfighter was even told to share his bank statement for the last six months just to prove beyond reasonable doubts that he had the capacity to finance a serious campaign that would face off with the Azimio one.
The source added that Khalwale decided to buy time by insisting that he was able to deliver the seat and even promised to table the above concerns just to drive away any doubts. Fast-foward, the senator could not bring forward any of those things and this was the first sign to the negotiators that he was not only an unserious candidate but also one on a losing mission.
To further make his life more difficult, the Kenya Kwanza political brokers instead wanted senator Cleophas Malala to go for the top seat as opposed to Khalwale and they would do anything to support the senator even if it meant sacrificing Boni because of his political insignificance having lost the previous election to the incumbent Kakamega governor Wyckliffe Oparanya who vied under the ODM ticket.
Further, Cleophas Malala deserved a bigger reward according to the insiders in Kenya Kwanza having single handedly brought Musalia Mudavadi to William Ruto’s side. It is said that one of the conditions by Malala was to get the Kakamega seat in exchange of the “hard work.”
Fastfoward, the Broke Boni Khalwale was completely locked out of the Kakamega gubernatorial race and the man was feeling isolated like a girl dumped by his long term lover after impregnating her with twins. Tied between losing financial favors from the doyen and consequently being broke the rest of his life, the bullfighter had to cooperate with the “political arrangements.”
The former Ikolomani MP is reported to have at one point thought of decamping to Azimio but there was a major challenge-the man does not see eye to eye with the incumbent governor Wyckliffe Oparanya who is the ODM deputy leader. Thus, he knew very well that despite Azimio being more popular in Western compared to Kenya kwanza, his goose would have definitely been cooked by Oparanya the minute he decided to cross over to Azimio. Also he was not sure of who would give him financial support (campaign money) if he left William Ruto.
It is on that basis that Boni Khalwale said that he was willing to concede ground and run for the Kakamega senatorial seat because he would ride on the Kenya Kwanza wave in Western after the likes of Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula joined the deputy president.
The bullfighter was also assured that all his campaign materials would be taken care of by the big man and that his work will only be to grab a microphone and campaign without spending a shilling from his pocket.
So sweet was the deal that the broke Boni Khalwale quickly ran away with it and even hinted that there was no need to fight with his brother Cleophas Malala over the seat since that is what the Azimio side wanted.
Another source hinted that Boni Khalwale demanded that he be assured of an appointment by the UDA/ANC/Ford Kenya incase he loses the senatorial seat because he was “very tired of being in the political cold and having to beg for favors.”
On Their side, Boni Khalwale’s supporters had the following to say after he stepped down for Cleophas Malala:

“I wanted him to be there so that he can see fire again from ODM aspirant.”
“Why is wetangula feeling sorry for you? Could it be that the ground is more weta than weta.”
“Coward..With your experience and exposure Malala was supposed to step down for you..
You’ve shut yourself on the toe..”
“Next that will happen is you leaving UDA for another party and face off with Malala and others at the ballot. I am 100% sure this will happen because you have been forced to shelve your ambition.”
“This has been done to silence Malala from advocating for the Deputy president slot for Mudavadi in Kenya kwisha!! Sadly both of you are going to fail!!!”
“Hakuna mahali ungefika…u sensed defeat leave that toddler to us..Fernandes Barasa will win by a landslide.”
“Unaachia aje mtoto kiti hivo? You are more senior to do what you have done. Am not happy with you. Anyway Malala Omondi won’t make it again. Kakamega is azimio zone.”
