With the 30-days -restriction of movement imposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta last month coming to an end, most Kenyans are of the idea for the President to fully open the economy, an idea some church leaders are against.
Kitale Catholic Diocese Bishop Anthony Maurice Crowley has asked the President to look for alternative ways of reopening the economy, saying the lifting of the suspension of travel between counties will only help in an escalation of Covid-19 cases in the country.
“As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be instruments of God’s protection for the vulnerable and the common good, bishop Crowley said in a  statement in his office Tuesday. The President who is  God-fearing should look for alternative ways instead of opening up Nairobi and the coastal towns,” he said.
The man of God argued that most Kenyans had not fully followed the guidelines issued by the ministry of health, therefore, there wasn’t much need to reopen the whole country despite the tough economic hardships that most people are undergoing
Bishop Anthony also hit at the political class for exhibiting a lot of hypocrisy and impunity by going against the regulations placed by the ministry of health and wondered why the government was applying the double standards in the fight against coronavirus.

The Bishop’s grievances come just a few days before the President announces the new measure the country will put to curb the spread of coronavirus. President Kenyatta is expected to make the announcements before or on the 6th of July.
So far 41 counties out the 47 have registered cases of coronavirus and by Wednesday, the country recorded the record-breaking number of coronavirus cases tested in a day. On 1 July, Kenya recorded 307 new coronavirus cases raising the number of confirmed cases to 6673.
