Another Gold Mine Collapses In Bondo Killing One Miner 2 Weeks After The Abimbo Incident

A miner was killed after another illegal gold mine collapsed at Waringa village in Bondo , Siaya county.

The deceased identified as Dedan Onyango died after a stone hit him when the mine collapsed.

The area chief Walter Omollo who confirmed the incident said Onyango was among a group of miners who were working in illegal mines thus risking their lives.

“Our people, we are warning you. If you know you want to mine find modern means to do so that will prevent such tragedies as you try to fend for your families,” Omollo said

Other miners were rescued alive and the body of the deceased was transferred to the Bondo Hospital morgue.

The incident comes 14 days after Abimbo gold mine collapsed leading to the death of one miner.

Several other miners who had been trapped in the rubble during the December 2 incident were rescued alive.

Currently, rescue operations are still ongoing to rescue one more miner who has been underground for two weeks now.

The family of Tom Okwach camps at the site with hopes that their kin will be found.

“I will not leave here until I see my son even if it will take me months. I am not sure whether he is alive or dead,” said Okwach’s mother.
