Al-Shabaab Names And Gives Credit To Kenyan Suicide Bomber Who Helped Them Capture Amara Town In Somalia

Date:

Al-Shabaab have praised a Kenyan suicide bomber who helped them capture the strategic town of Amara which lies on the route to their stronghold coastal town of Harardheere.

The terrorist group stormed a military base in Amara on August 24th 2021 killing at least six people including soldiers and civilians.

Residents of Amara said the morning assault started with a suicide bomb attack which targeted government special force units, known as Danab and Darawish.

Somali National Army Forces left the base two days after the attack, only for Al-Shabaab to move in and re-occupied the town.

Al Shabaab’s Radio Andalus said in a broadcast the group was behind the attack and the capture of the town, adding it had seized 14 cars and 10 gun-mounted pick up trucks.

Somali government and regional forces took control of Amara in early August, the town had been under Al Shabaab control for the last 10 years.

Al-Shabaab on Wednesday September 8th claimed that its suicide bomber who attacked the army base was a Kenya, born and raised in Mombasa.

The terrorist group said a Kenyan by the name Abdirahman Zeynudin was the driver of the Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED).

It is still not clear how and when Abdirahman Zeynudin joined Al-Shabaab. Security reports indicate that most Kenyans who join the militant group come from the north eastern and coastal parts of Kenya, particularly Kwale and Lamu counties.
