Aisha Jumwa Rallies Coastal Residents To Reject BBI If Not Written In Swahili

Date:

Embattled Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa has asked residents from the Coastal region to reject the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report because it is not written in Swahili.

The vocal legislator recalled an instance where the youth from her region were denied job opportunities by the Maritime Authority because of their poor English-speaking skills.

She pointed out that when Koreans and Filipinos land in the Coastal region, they only know a few English words yet they are offered jobs.

She wondered why the youths from the region were being denied the same opportunities by the Maritime Authority.

“When Koreans and Filipinos come in those ships none of them can speak English and this is because the maritime industry has its own language that everyone working on the ships needs to know and they are just a few words like ‘Jambo, hello, welcome, thank you, very good,’ so nobody should stand and claim that youth from the Coast cannot get jobs in maritime because they cannot speak English” an English translation of what she said states.

The sharp-tongued MP stressed out that the people from the Coastal region were being disrespected by being told to support a document that is written in a language they are purported not to comprehend.

Aisha Jumwa went on to state that if the people from the Coast will not be given jobs because they do not speak English well, they also should not be given the BBI report to read.

She added that they will only accept it if it is written in Swahili.

“Isn’t the BBI report also written in English? Yet they want us to pass it, we won’t! If they will not give Pwani youth jobs because they can’t speak English then why bring us the BBI report for us to read? We don’t want it because we don’t understand it,” she added.

On Monday 26, the BBI report was officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga at the Bomas of Kenya.
