Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti has also followed in the footsteps of Kisii governor Simba Arati in a bid to streamline the transport sector in her county.
Days ago, Arati made headlines when he paraded county government vehicles and along with their drivers after he established that 256 people were employed for the jobs yet the county government had only 82 vehicles.
“I expected to see 256 drivers who I called here. This is sickening. How else can we explain? Are some drivers passengers in those vehicles?” the governor posed after the excess drivers failed to show up for the inspection exercise.
Ndeti also discovered some of the shortcomings in the sector following the audit she conducted in the Machakos county Transport sector.
According to her, she discovered that several vehicles did not have number plates while some tractors had number plates on pieces of paper.
She also plans to take stock of functional county government vehicles, the grounded and missing ones in a bid to harmonize the human resources “with the existing fleet of vehicles.”
The governor further cautioned those who take drugs from hospitals to sell in their private clinics and hospitals
“If there is anyone who will take drugs from hospitals to sell, just know that you are finished. Most of the people here in Machakos have my contacts so it is easy for me to get information. I hear there are those selling drugs meant for hospitals, I will make sure, through the right channels your chemist is locked and you get arrested. Leave alone hospital drugs,” Ndeti said
The governor took over leadership of the county from Alfred Mutua who served two terms since 2013.
Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza also followed suit and had all the county government vehicles paraded at Kinoru stadium for inspection.
