The newly elected Malawi President, Lazarus Chakwera has filled the cabinet positions with relatives, a move that has sparked criticism.
Chakwera’s former running mate in the 2019 elections Sidik Mia has been appointed as the Minister for transport while his wife, Abida Mia appointed as the deputy minister for Lands.
Businessman Gospel Kazako has been appointed as the information minister while his sister-in-law Agnes Nkusa Nkhoma is the deputy of agriculture.
The president also appointed Kenny Kandondi as the new labor minister while his sister Khumbize Kandondo as the health minister.
President Chakwera’s previous appointee in the justice minister lawyer Mordecai Msiska declined to take up the position citing it would be regarded as a reward for representing him in court during the case that nullified President Peter Mutharika’ presidential election win.
Ironically, the current President criticized for being nepotistic and filling his ministries with people from his region.
Chakwera has also been criticized for filling his cabinet with more having 70 percent of people from the central region which is also his political stronghold.
