ODM Senator Drops From Senate Deputy Speaker Race

ODM Senator, Stewart Madzayo is the latest contender to drop out of the race to replace Prof. Kithure Kindiki as the senate deputy speaker.

According to Senator Stewart Madzayo, he abandoned the race after wide consultation with both his supporters and colleagues at the Senate and within his party and party leader Raila Odinga.

“My decision is premised majorly on the need to continue supporting the political coherence being advanced by H.E Raila Amollo Odinga and H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta,” Senator Madzayo said.

From his statement to the newsrooms, the senator believes his decision to no longer run for the post of Senate Deputy Speaker, will allow for gender equity within the house.

In his address, Kilifi Senator thanked his colleagues in the Senate for their support as well as his supporters whom he says remained the strongest motivation to his leadership endeavors.

Kirinyaga Senator Charles Kabiru was the first to quit the battles to succeed his Tharaka Nithi counterpart Senator Kithure Kindiki.

The move now leaves only three to contest for the vacant position after nominated Senator Millicent Omanga also dropping out of the race.

The remaining contesters are Jubilee nominated senator Isaac Mwaura, ODM nominated senator Judith Pareno and Prof Margaret Kamar.

In the race, Jubilee Party has endorsed Uasin Gishu Senator Prof.Margaret Kamar for the deputy speaker post.

Making his announcement on Twitter Majority White Senator Irungu Kang’ata said they are going to support a Prof. Magaret Kamar since the party values support women empowerment

The elections for the vacant position with be conducted in the Senate chamber with all the members to vote through a secret ballot

For one to win the race in the first round, the contender must have at least two-thirds of the votes which represents 45 out of the 67 votes.
