Russian President Vladimir Putin has in recent years turned his eyes to Africa as it renews its geopolitical clout.

Putin wooed Sudan with military and civilian nuclear cooperation, signing a deal between the countries’ armed forces in May 2019 set to last seven years.

Russia is not ready to miss out on the African cake, already other foreign powers have established military bases in Africa.

Djibouti hosts the highest number of foreign bases, US, France, Japan and China have all established naval bases there to expand their tactical presence.

Sometimes this year, China mooted plans to establish a military base in Kenya sparking uproar from Kenyans who already see China as ‘recolonizing’ the country.

The UK however has several military bases in Kenya under the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK).

Batuk provides a location for combined arms light role infantry battle group exercises, forward operating bases and engineering.
