Nairobi Drivers To Lose Their Driving Licenses If Found Using Pedestrian Lanes

Date:

The Nairobi Metropolitan Service Director Major General Badi on Friday released a memo banning motorists from using pedestrian lanes.

This directive implies that driving, riding or parking on pedestrian lanes will be illegal for both motorcycles and vehicles. The statement read: “Any driver or rider found in contravention will be prosecuted and their driving licenses suspended. Where damage is occasioned to the infrastructure, the violator will pay for its restoration to the previous condition.”

The NMS boss further expressed his displeasure on how unauthorized officers or personalities allocate dropping/picking points to private and public vehicles. As a result, the new regulation bars anyone from assigning parking slots and picking bays. Any party that wishes to engage in the mentioned activities must seek written authority from the office of the director general, after which the permission will be granted by the director of roads, transport and public works.

He further added that any approval issued without following this laid down procedure will be considered null and void.

The directives come in the wake of NMS launching many projects aimed at re-carpeting of roads, enhancing streetlights and improving the drainage system in Nairobi.

Florists were also banned from selling or displaying flowers and seedlings on pathways belonging to cyclists and pedestrians. Those who wish to do such displays will be allowed to display them two meters away from the pedestrian walkways after obtaining a license.
