Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani has ruled out the possibility of closing down the economy amidst Upsurge in COVID-19 cases.
Mr. Yatani warned Kenyans to brace themselves for difficult times ahead if the containment measures do not work. His statement came in the wake of reports that the health facilities in the country are getting overwhelmed.
The cabinet Secretary said that our economy had already contracted during the lockdown period. As a result, another lockdown would hurt the economy further. He noted that the country had been starved financially by the tax relief measures and the cessation of movement.
“Total closure of the economy cannot work. It is difficult. The people have to work and have to place food on the table. They cannot do that when the economy is shut.” Advised Yatani.

He further pointed out that Kenya has so far spent to the tune of 172 billion to cushion the economy since the pandemic broke out. The cabinet secretary advised people to re adjust their economy at a personal level because it will not be business as usual.
