Nyayo House Staffers Seek Bribes For Passports

Date:

The voracious pack of hyenas is back at Nyayo House, targeting those seeking crucial document documents such as passports.

While crossing the gates that lead you to the building housing the Immigration Department you will hand into the hands of a group working in cahoots with employees of the ministry extort you.

Congestion at the famous House in the country for collecting passports seems unending.

In July the Postal Corporation and the Immigration department signed a Memorandum of Understanding to heal ease congestion at Nyayo House, especially with Covid-19 guidelines which require social distancing. However, harrowing disorganization and long queues are being witnessed.

Those collecting their passports are said to be issued with queue tickets but midway, a staffer comes to collect the ticket and calls them out randomly.

Everyone is expected to pay an Sh180 ‘delivery fee’.

Sources have also revealed to us the applicants also pay at least Sh2,500 to secure the release of their passports, even after paying the required fees. Those who can’t read between the lines make countless trips to the counters.

Making applications and tracking processes online seem to have done little to push the corruption cartels at Nyayo House.

The department requires one to pay using mobile money, credit/debit card, and online banking.

On the normal occasion, it takes about 10 working days to get your first passport once you have submitted the form at the Immigration but for other applications, it should take about five working days.

It might take a longer duration if more information is required or the application form is not filled correctly.

But such provision is only on paper. Sources revealed that the mess that Nayyo House’s Immigration department, where desperate Kenyans are looking for passports and foreigners seeking work permits has become a cash cow for selfish individuals who are minting a lot of money from them.

The corrupt officials at the State Department have visited untold misery upon innocent individuals. Many have lost golden opportunities outside Kenya or have incurred extra expenses because of the delayed passports.
