Holy See announced that high ranking Vatican official Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu has resigned unexpectedly from office.
Cardinal Giovanni Angelo has since denied any wrongdoing.
“The Holy Father accepted the resignation from the office of Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the rights connected to the Cardinalate, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu,” a statement from the Holy See said.
It gave no additional details.
For the last six years, Cardinal Becciu has assumed the role of Substitute for General Affairs in the Secretariate of State, where he daily meets the Pope and was one of the Pope’s close aides.
It was at that time in office when the Cardinal was linked to the property deal. The purchase of the luxury building in London’s Sloane Avenue was purchased using offshore funds and companies.

The Cardinal who gave up his right to vote for a new Pope was Cardinal Keith O’Brien who resigned in 2013 and a sex scandal.
