Countries that preferred Joe Biden’s win like Canada, UK, France, Germany etc. were quick to send their messages of congratulation the moment US media broke news about the victory.
Other countries, especially autocratic regimes, like Russia, China and Brazil have all remained silent since on Biden’s win.
China, which has been on Trump’s bad book since he came to power, has surprisingly refused to congratulate Biden.
China’s reservation to congratulate Biden perhaps stems from the President-elect’s speech during Democratic debate in Charleston, South Carolina where he referred China’s President Xi Jinping “a thug” who has put millions of people in labor camps.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Monday that the country had taken note of Biden’s declaration of victory in the US presidential election but is holding off on sending any message of congratulations.

The ministry’s spokesperson further stated that the result of the election would be determined under US laws and procedures, and Beijing would follow international practices in extending its sentiments.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also remained silent about the results. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that they are still waiting for the outcome of the legal procedure.
“We think it appropriate to wait for the official vote count. You can see that there are certain legal procedures that have been announced by the current president. That is why the situations are different and we therefore think it appropriate to wait for an official announcement,” Kremlin said.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has a working relationship with Trump despite tensions over immigration policy, praised the incubent at a news conference Saturday.
The Mexican President has also withheld his congratulation of Biden until the outcome of legal process intiated by Trump against Biden’s win.
Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, known as the “Trump of the Tropics,” and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have also not congratulated Biden.
Others countries, such as Israel and Saudi Arabia, that enjoyed a warm relationship with Trump took time to congratulate Biden and even so chose their words carefully.
