“I would not wish this condition on my worst enemy,” Elisabeth Anderson Sierra, who has been producing milk non-stop for 9 years, said.
In a video that was shared by Guiness World Records, Elisabeth said that her estimated donations of breastmilk to babies who need it the most are over 350,000 ounces.
“Nobody wants to live like this at all. It is impossible to know the number of individual babies that have benefitted,” she said.
Her body produces lots of a hormone known as prolactin that drives the milk production.
“Hyperlactation syndrome is technically a disability and I feel like we had to adapt just as anyone else would with any disability. First of all everything was new to me, it was a learning curve, everything was a struggle, everything was painful. It has not only affected me but also my family,” she explained.
The mother of three says that she never wastes any breast milk and it is all donated.
Elisabeth also noted that she would one day stop donating milk because it will reach a point that she would be drained mentally and physically.
She has the option of going for medication that combats the prolactin hormone, but the side effects of the medication are very serious.
“Another option that I have is potentially looking into a double mastectomy to remove all of the glandular tissue that is producing breastmilk. My current goal is to ensure that my son has enough milk and then from there the most promising optioning is for me to get a double mastectomy” she said.
She has however been feted as world record holder of the largest donation of breast milk by an individual, which is 1599.68 liters.
“That record only takes into account what I have donated to a milk bank and not all of the other donations that have taken place locally and worldwide to recipients,” she further said.
