Locals of Rabai constituency in Kilifi have been thrown into mourning following the death of their MP William Kamoti Mwamkale.
Kamoti lost his life on Sunday evening through a road accident that occurred around 9.00pm moments after presenting his nomination documents to IEBC offices.
The accident occurred at the Mnarani area in Kilifi county when his driver swerved to avoid colliding with an oncoming truck. The SUV Prado was however hit the truck and rolled into a ditch.
Two men who responded to the accident first found the MP still breathing. They attempted first aid on him but he did not respond.
He was found with his legs outside the vehicle while his body was inside the car wreckage.
“They tried to help him and seek help from motorists but none of them stopped. They stayed there for around 45 minutes and he died as he could not get immediate medical attention,” Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire told journalists.
The driver sustained injuries and was rushed to Kilifi hospital.
The lawmaker was seeking to defend his seat under an ODM ticket in the August 9 elections and had been cleared to vie.
The lawyer was the first elected Member of Parliament for Rabai constituency which was created under the 2010 constitution.
In parliament, he was a member of the Justice and legal affairs committee.
Kamoti was among the lawmakers who opposed pay cuts that had been proposed by the salaries and Remuneration Committee some years back, saying that MPs had more responsibilities as compared to the president therefore there was no need for their salaries to be reduced.
