Kinder Joy, a type of chocolate specifically meant for children is so popular in the Kenyan market.
The product, from the Italian candy manufacturer, Ferrero, has also enjoyed a worldwide market for quite some time, but now concerns are being raised about the safety of the product after a Salmonella outbreak linked to Kinder Joy was confirmed in Europe.
A total of 63 people, mostly children below the age of five years are said to have been infected with the bacteria after consuming the chocolate thus forcing European countries to withdraw the product from supermarket shelves as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Bureau of Standards has put the Kinder Joy products on notice following the health concerns.
Speaking to Business Daily, KEBS managing director Bernard Njiraini said that all the products, from Ferrero, that are being sold in the country will be tested for safety before any action is taken.
“We shall take samples for the test to ascertain they are okay,” said Njiraini.
The report has been received with mixed reactions with some Kenyans wondering the kind of explanation they will give their children on why they can not have Kinder Joy anymore.
Another citizen however backed the investigation saying that the chocolate might have some addictive substance and that is why children cry for them.
“If I believed in Illuminati, I would say Kinder Joy is a member because the level at which kids cry to have them in supermarkets is alarming,” read a tweet by Edith Naliaka.
Salmonella is a common bacterial infection that affects the intestinal tract. Some of the symptoms of the infection include diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, headache, fever, abdominal cramps and blood in the stool.
