Why Motorists Driving Along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway Should Be Cautious

Date:

Motorists driving along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway have been advised to be cautious so as to avoid accidents due to the presence of wild animals.

The wild animals are said to be out on the road looking for food and pasture.

According to the Friends of Lake Naivasha chairman, Francis Muthui, the high numbers of wild animals on the roads is being witnessed due to the closure of wildlife corridors, fencing of ranches in the area and the current drought that has pushed the animals to the road to search for water and pasture.

Fencing has caused the animals to go roaming because they longer feel free and safe inside fenced ranches.

“In the last couple of months, we have seen an increase in the number of animals along the highway and this has resulted in serious accidents,” he said on Sunday.

A senior traffic police officer said that the presence of the animals pose a threat to road safety along major roads in the region.

“We have recorded serious accidents on the three roads all caused by wild animals that are seeking pasture and it’s time this was addressed before we lose lives,” he cautioned.
