When Mike Tyson Employed Donald Trump

Date:

Many might wonder about the kind of relationship President Donald Trump and former boxer Mike Tyson share. The photograph above clicked over thirty years ago. One described those in the picture – “the baddest man on the planet and the other “the most ridiculed president ever”.

It was in July 1988 when Mike Tyson hired Donald Trump to be his strategist and adviser.

The team-up between Mike Tyson and Donald Trump was confirmed by 1988. The New York Times quoted the then real estate tycoon Donald saying, “Mike Tyson’s career, including but not limited to the lawsuits going back and forth between Mike and his current manager, Bill Cayton.”

The pairing occurred within a matter of hours of Mike Tyson shocking the world with his 91-second knockout victory over unbeaten heavyweight boxer Michael Spinks. Tyson fired Bill Cayton putting an end to his four-year contract.

Donald Trump organized the fight between Mike Tyson and Michale Spinks to promote his Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. The fight happened in Atlantica City, New Jersey.

At the time of the fight, Michael Spinks was the Olympic gold medalist while Tyson was the reigning first boxer to hold all three major belts – WBA (World Boxing Association), IBF (International Boxing Federation), and WBC (World Boxing Council).

Incidentally the first Mike Tyson’s first USD 100 million-a-minute fight. New York Times reported that Tyson hired Trump at a substantial fee though the amount was not known. The contract earned Trump a third of what Tyson made inside the boxing ring and outside it.

Tyson and Trump’s arrangement started going south after the death of Tyson’s co-manager and Cayton’spartner Jim Jacobs.  Tyson’s wife, Robin Givens, and mother-in-law Ruth Roper began questioning the amount of money the boxer earned.

It is not clear when Trump and Tyson first came in touch. But words have it that the relationship between Tyson and Trump gave Trump a window of opportunity. Trump is claimed to have said a day before the Tyson-Spinks fight, the boxer had expressed his “wish” that he managed his finances.

Trump is said to have paid USD 11 million to organize the fight between Tyson and Spinks. The number of spectators passed 21,000 who paid over USD 12 million to watch the fight. And, Trump earned another USD 15 million as gambling revenue at his casino.

The relationship between the two didn’t however last long after a number of issues including an alleged affair between the future US President and boxer’s wife Given started coming in.

In 1992 Tyson was sentenced to six years in prison for raping a beauty pageant contestant. When everybody turned their back against Tyson, it was Trump who came on his side. Trump advocated for Tyson to be allowed to train and fight, and the money he earned in the fight be donated to a charity for rape victims.

Tyson later returned the favour to Trump in 2015, when he ran for US presidential poll and was being criticized for his Islamophobic comments. Tyson, who had converted to Islam at the time, supported his old buddy, Trump in the presidential election.
