Westlands Murder Suicide: Love Triangle Involving NRG Radio Presenter, Her Fiancé And BBC Journalist Ends Tragically At Ibis Styles Hotel

Date:

29-year-old Henry Timati Mauti killed his mpango wa kando BBC journalist 42-year-old Kate Mitchell at Ibis Styles Hotel where his fiancée Michelle Akinyi was also booked.

Timati Mauti booked his fiancée NRG radio presenter Michelle Akinyi alias Darya Kish on the 7th floor of Ibris Styles Hotel in Westlands on November 19th.

After checking in with Akinyi, Mauti left her in the 7th floor room and went to another room on the 8th floor to have fun with BBC journalist Kate Mitchell whom he later killed in unclear circumstance.

Police on Monday November 23rd said preliminary investigations pointed to a murder-suicide case, adding that Mauti whose body was found in the same Ibis Styles Hotel died from a fall.

Nairobi region police commander Augustine Nthumbi said Mauti could have killed Mitchell – a British citizen – before jumping from the window.

Some of the hotel staff responded to a panic button but when they went to the room, they found out that it was locked from inside.

Security officials said they got the report at around 3:38 am Friday that an alarm had been triggered from room 810 where the BBC journalist had been staying since November 16th.

They rushed to the room but could not access it as it had been locked from inside and sought the help of a technician to force the door open.

Therein, they found Kate Mitchell lying down naked in the bathroom and immediately called an ambulance.

When the medical staff arrived, they confirmed the BBC journalist had a stab wound at the lateral left side of the neck and bruises around the eye.

Police said there were signs of struggle and on a further check realized that the window appeared to have been forced open and had cracks.

On checking through the window, Henry Mauti’s lifeless body was seen on the first floor, directly below the 8th floor window at Mitchell’s room.

“The suspected culprit… jumped off the eighth floor of the hotel through the room’s window after sensing that the hotel security might be after him,” Nairobi regional police commander Augustine Nthumbi told reporters.

Nthumbi said that the 42-year-old British national checked in at the Hotel on November 16th alone and was joined by Mauti later.

Mitchell and Mauti were seen together at Ibris Styles Hotel from November 16th. The Kenyan man left the hotel and came back to be with the British.

On that fateful November 19th, Mitchell and Mauti had an argument that later escalated into an altercation. When the situation worsened, she pressed the panic button.

Detectives said the BBC journalist had earlier been seen with Mauti whom they proceeded with to her room on the 8th floor.

Mauti was also booked on the 7th floor of Ibris Styles Hotel where he was to spend the night with his girlfriend Michelle Akinyi.

The NRG Radio presenter is among those who have been questioned over the deaths of Henry Mauti and Kate Mitchell.

“We are also investigating to establish whether he was pushed to death through the window or he jumped out after sensing that the woman had pressed the panic button and that the hotel security staff could be after him,” Nthumbi said.

Kate Mitchell is said to have just returned to Kenya and was attached to BBC Media Action’s office in Ethiopia.

Henry Mauti was an alumnus of United States International University-Kenya (USIU), he studied radiography.
