Things aren’t rosy for ODM leader Raila Odinga during his Western Kenya tour over the weekend.
It seems Raila’s point man, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya in the region hasn’t done a good job in selling his agenda within the Mulembe nation.
Raila’s party has only three MPs in Kakamega county and the governor, and during his visit only Shinyalu’s MP was present.
The cold reception gives Raila Odinga a lot to think about. It just showed how much effort Raila needs to put to consolidate his support in the region.
To rebuild his stature in the region Raila needs to rebuild his party and that needs committed individuals and resources.
ODM has previously lost most of its membership to rival parties such as ANC and Jubilee. And that shows much task Raila has to consolidate his votes in the region come 2022.
Raila seems to have realized that he is losing grip of his traditional political bases like Western Kenya, The ODM leader, therefore, has now embarked on an aggressive charm to consolidate his men to counter forays by his main rivals ahead of the next General elections.
Raila is planning a flurry of activities to re-energize his strongholds countrywide. He has lined up a series of meeting in Western Kenya to counter the efforts of his main political rival – Deputy President William Ruto who has been making inroads in the region.

After his seemingly disappointing tour in Western, Raila’s men from the region say they have lined up engagement meetings to reinvigorate the party.
ODM Deputy Party Leader and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who will be leading the offensive in Western Kenya said ODM has embarked on a crucial phase to reconnect with its supporters across the country.
“There is a lot we are doing in Western Kenya and other parts of the country in the coming weeks. Some activities don’t need the party leader and I will lead them myself, especially in Western,” Oparanya said.
