Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula on Friday had a confrontation with members of the security forces after he attempted to hold a political rally in Bungoma town despite the Covid19 safety guidelines issued by the government.

Wetangula who was leading a convoy into Kamukuya area, was unable to proceed after police teargassed his vehicles over concerns of social distancing by the crowds that were gathering around him.

Ironically, the Senator recently lost his own blood brother to Covid19, Tony Waswa and had advised Bungoma residents to take the coronavirus seriously and observe the government’s safety guidelines.

Politicians have been put on the spot for engaging in social gatherings at the risk of the public with Health CS Mutahi Kagwe stating that the law applied to everyone and the government had not allowed public gatherings.

Elsewhere, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, on Wednesday, June 17, addressed reports linking him to joining President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet. Musyoka announced his political party’s decision to ditch former prime minister Raila Odinga’s NASA immediately the Covid-19 movement restrictions are lifted.

He was speaking as Wiper signed a collaboration agreement with Jubilee going further to reveal Wiper was in an advanced stage of joining the Jubilee coalition.

As the ink dried on the documents, the issue of the degree of cooperation between the parties arose including whether the former vice-president would take up a cabinet position if offered.

Kalonzo who spoke after signing a cooperation agreement between his party and the Jubilee Party made it clear that he is still not ‘very keen’ on being part of the government.

He stated that it would not be wise for him to accept the post prior to the general election.The post-poll deal signing comes amidst claims of a looming Cabinet reshuffle by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Expressing exuberance after sealing the deal, Kalonzo stated that the parties would work together in the run-up to the 2022 General Election.

“We have accepted the president’s call to work together. We are happy that we have been so well received by the Jubilee Party,” Kalonzo stated, moments after the signing.
