Veteran football Dennis Oliech shared the story of his life with comedian and radio presenter Churchill last weekend.
In the interview, Oliech revealed that he avoids interviews because he is a stammerer. He however said that he has learnt how to control it over the years because of his celebrity status but the problem has not gone away completely.
The footballer said that he had a talent for playing football and he has participated in the game since his days in primary school. Due to the talent, a high school identified him and sent him a form one calling letter while he was still in class 7.
“When I was in Jamhuri primary in standard 7, I received an invitation letter to join Kakamega boys high school in form one. I was good in football that I did not need to finish class 8. Even if I would have gotten zero still I would have joined Kakamega,” Oliech said.
After finishing class 8,he was called to join a school in Machakos; however joined Kakamega Boys where his two elder brothers were schooling before transferring to Kamkunji high school. Throughout his years in high school, Oliech never spent a single cent on school fees because of his talent.
“I never paid school fees, I was lucky. That is why I am always telling people, talent can pay. I was really lucky because I never paid anything from Form One to Form Four,” he said.
According to Oliech, he ran away from Kakamega High school after his elder brother Okumu, who was taking care of their bills at home, passed on.
He returned to his home in Nairobi so that he could play and make money to fend for the family.
“So I saw if I can make money while here let me go to my hood and that’s how I went to Kamkunji before going to Mathare united trials,” Oliech narrated.
