Unbelievable: 124 girls will sit for this year’s national exams while pregnant in the County

Date:

In an effort to ensure that every student takes the examinations, starting today, 124 female students from Kajiado County will sit for this year’s national exams while pregnant.

10 expecting girls will be appearing for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations, 28 girls for the KCPE exams, and 86 girls for the KCSE exams, according to information provided by the Kajiado Acting County Commissioner Harun Kamau.

“It’s so unfortunate these girls will have to sit for their exam expectant. Some of them are heavily pregnant and we are hopeful they will be able to write their exams. We will ensure they will be closely monitored and those who might give birth during exams assisted,” said County Commissioner.

Given that most families have now relocated to neighboring counties in search of pasture for their cattle, the number of expectant learners may really be considerably greater.

It is believed that early marriage and certain of the community’s retrogressive traditions, such as Female Gentle Mutilation (FGM), drove most females into early, unintended pregnancies. Some had already been wed off to chosen suitors.
