21-year old Linus Chivondo, who was arrested for shoplifting for the second timeĀ in a span of one month, has been set free.
The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji dropped charges against Chivondo on condition that heĀ goes for a mental check-up to ascertain his mental health status and for counselling.
The suspect was represented by lawyer Vienna Mongare. The prosecution agreed to set him free after the agreementĀ that he will proceed for a mental check up was signed.
The step was taken due to the public’s interest.
“After the investigation of the offences and conduct of background check, it appears that the interest of the public and your own will best be served by not charging you,” part of the agreement read.
A local website noted that Chivondo was to be takenĀ to Mathare Mental Hospital for the process.
The father of one was arrested at Naivas Supermarket on Friday evening and taken to Central Police Station where he spend the weekend.
It is alleged that he was found stealing maize flour.
His rearrest came just a month after former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko bailed him out of jail. He had been sentenced to one year in jail for stealing goods worths Kshs 3,165.
Sonko not only paid his fine but also bought for him shopping enough to last him a month and promised him a job. To add on that, Kenyans contributed a separate Ksh100,000 for him through comedian YY.
His rearrest got Kenyans wondering why he repeated the same mistake after being given a second chance to redeem himself.
In a YouTube interview however, YY revealed that he had been in constant communication with Chivondo and offered him guidance and counselling to make a better person out of him but that was an uphill task.
Apparently YY bought him a number of phones because he used it as an excuse not to shoplift again while claiming that the phones were stolen.
“Just the third day after I bought him a phone he was already calling me that he had lost it, since his release I have bought him nearly four phones, I even bought him a home theatre to ensure he has no excuse to say he is bored, I donāt know whether that home theatre is still there, ” the comedian said.
