Teacher Attempts To Burn Himself, Former Colleagues Inside A Locked Staffroom

Date:

A primary school teacherĀ  in Bungoma county who had been fired attempted to set himself and his former colleagues on fire.

According to sources, Wycliffe Akeve, a former teacher at Makemo primary school in Webuye East had been sacked after it was established that he defiled and impregnated a minor at the school.

It is alleged that the teacher stormed the school’s staff room with petrol and locked himself in together with other teachers. He then set the building on fire.

The watchman said that the suspect accessed the school through the fence and engaged inĀ  a chat with the colleagues before the incident occurred.

ā€œThe teacher arrived in school around 7:00 am and gained entry through the backdoor,ā€ the security guard said.

It took efforts of parents, pupils and students from a nearby Friend Makemo High School to rescue the teachers who were locked in the smoky staffroom.

Webuye East Assistant Commissioner Peter Yego said that the suspect, who was rushed to a health facility after sustaining burn injuries, will be charged with defilement, attempted murder, suicide, and destruction of public property, once he recovers.

He added that the teacher had been pained by the untimely termination of his employment after he was found guilty of the offence.
