Changamwe police officer who took his own life asked in his suicide note that funeral contributions should be used to repay his debts. Mike Sonko has now settled his debts.
In his suicide note, the officer asked his boss to treat his suicide as a natural death stating that he no longer wanted to live.
The officer further asked his colleagues to send some money to his creditors in the event that contributions towards his funeral expenses are made.
“Kwanza kabisa natoa shukrani zangu kwa ule mda tumefanya kazi pamoja. Yangu nikuwaambia mimi naona muda wangu wa kuuishi duniani umefika mwisho, sina any other reason, just take it as a natural death and take me home sir.
“Pili naomba kama mtaform a WhatsApp group ya mchango please out of that contribution, please submit Ksh24,000 to Sgt Maina. These two numbers ambao walinisaidia na pesa yao; Jeruto – 0726#####5 -MPESA shop -17,000, Philipita – 0726#####1 – This lady she’s my classmate from class one to Form 4, alinisaidia na Ksh50k. Please treat this as special as my family hawajui hiyo madeni, those two women, call them,” the suicide note stated.
Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has since settled part of the debt owed by the late Changamwe police officer who took his own life.
In a post shared on his social media pages on Friday December 10th, Sonko said he came across the heartbreaking story while browsing online.
“Alafu kuna part the late officer anaongelea madeni aliyoyawacha duniani yakatwe kwa pesa ya funeral itakayochangwa through whtsaap group. Kuna 17k deni ya Jeruto mpesa shop, Kuna deni ya 50k ya rafiki yake anaitwa philipita yakisiri. This is a very bad example to the public and it should not happen again in future. I urge all police officers facing various challenges to be addressing them with their boses if they don’t get quick solutions they should try to reach out to us as their local leaders we try if we can get solutions to their problems before deciding to take away their lives leaving their families to suffer and languish in poverty.
“Kwa leo not because of PR and show off but because I know how painful it is to loose a parent while you are still young I have decided to clear the 17k deni ya mpesa shop and 50k deni on behalf of the family of this late officer vide the following mpesa transaction numbers PLA2VVHVOS KSH.17,000.00 sent to JERUTO NJOMO and PLA7VVHPRV KSH.50,000.00 sent to PHILIPINA PUTU, I shall also be willing to give a coffin and hearse to transport the body of the late officer to its final resting place if the family and Changamwe Ocs accept my offer so that all the funeral funds that will be raised through whtsaap groups and other forums go directly to help the family in other important issues like paying for school fees etc. Meanwhile let the officer rest in peace,” Sonko wrote.
