A 48-year old man from Eldoret chopped off his manhood at the base with a kitchen knife following perennial problems with his wife.
According to medics who treated him, the problems mostly were surrounding his reproductive organs.
The unidentified man is said to have cut off his penis after failing to take his medication due to his Schizophrenic condition.
According to a report published in the Urology Case Reports with hopes that the doctors would reattach it.
Doctors hoped to reattach his penis but had to abandon their plans because the organ had not been preserved properly and was detached for too long. His testicles were left intact.
Medics rushed him for surgery to clean his wound and gave him general anesthetic to knock him out so they could begin operating on the stump.
‘Self-inflicted penile amputation is an uncommon form of physical self-harm resulting from psychological anomaly. The condition not only presents a surgical emergency but also has the potential to cause subsequent challenges in self-care and sexual function thereby exacerbating the psychological distress of the patient,’ the medics wrote in the journal.
Dr Rono Kipkemoi, from Egerton University and colleagues said the man was ‘healing well’ after his operation.
In January 2019, a drunk man from Nyagacho in Kericho also chopped his manhood due to unknown reasons.
The Standard reported that Simon Muchiri committed the act at 3 am. He was rushed to Kericho District hospital so that the organ could be reattached but due to the nature of the wound, Muchiri was transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
A neighbor said that Muchiri was intoxicated and may not have known what he was doing.
