Kisumu West MP Olago Oluoch on Thursday defected from the Democratic Action Party-Kenya to the Movement for Democracy and Growth that is led by Ugenya MP David Ochieng’.
According to him, his decision was informed by plans by DAP-K to lock him out of the August 9 elections.
Oluoch revealed that as he received MDG’s nomination certificate to vie for the Kisumu West parliamentary seat in the elections.
“I realized the party I joined was just a trap. In the 13th Parliament, Kisumu West Will be represented by MDG,” Oluoch said.
He will be facing Rosa Buyu who was handed a direct ticket by ODM.
Oluoch has represented Kisumu West in parliament three times. He was first elected to the seat in 2007 through an ODM ticket.
In readiness for 2013 general elections, the lawmaker defected to Ford Kenya, which was still under Cord as ODM nominated Buyu for the position.
He won the elections as well as that of 2017 through a Ford Kenya ticket. In 2017, Buyu did not vie for the seat but contested for the Women Rep position which she won.
Oluoch was pitted against ODM’s John Awiti, who came second and an independent candidate identified as Kennedy Obiero who came third.
The incumbent joined DAP-K in January this year after noticing that Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula was leaning towards DP William Ruto’s side.
“I realized that Wetangula was inching closer to joining UDA. It is just a question of when,” he said.
Oluoch is however confident that he will defeat Buyu just like in previous elections because of his good relationship with voters.
“As long as you are loyal to the voter, you will never be a sycophant,” he said.
A netizen however previously explained Oluoch’s wins saying that they came as a result of ODM failure, yet Kisumu is an ODM stronghold.
“That is what has cost ODM many seats in the past. How do you explain Olago Oluoch winning with Ford Kenya in Kisumu and David Ochieng- MDG in Ugenya? The business of direct tickets to preferred candidates,” Mike Lagatt said
