Frustrated Kenyans dared former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale to give his daughter a wheelbarrow following her graduation and he was forced to come up with a clever explanation.
Wheelbarrow is the party symbol of William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which has propagating ‘kazi ni kazi’ narrative – any job is worth it.
Ruto and his allies have marketed themselves as hustlers who know the suffering of poor Kenyans and who will end poverty menace in the country if they capture power.
Boni Khalwale – a staunch Ruto ally – got a rather unexpected reactions after he took to social media to break news of his daughter’s graduation.
“Today is great! Inger Imbuhila Khalwale graduates with BSc Actuarial Science (Upper Second Class) University of Nairobi. Mama Fina Umina Khalwale & I thank God, Kakamega Hill Junior Sch, Malinya Primary Sch, Limuru H. Sch Loreto & the UON for our dota’s 18 year successful journey,” Khalwale tweeted.

Kenyans were eager to know whether Khalwale would assign a wheelbarrow to his daughter who is now a graduate or he would go ahead to secure her a prestigious white-collar job that befits her stellar achievements in education.
Some of the comments read; “thank you daktari, you can now give her wheelbarrow to start hustling with.” Another one read; “why would you educate your daughter to masters’ level, but on the other side, you hoodwink other Kenyans by giving them wheelbarrows, and mkokotenis (kart) to pull?”
Kenyans lamented that whereas Ruto and his allies are advancing this message of wheelbarrow, their children and next of kin are literally swimming in wealth – a scenario which is in sharp contrast with what the politicians are advancing as a ‘wheelbarrow economy’.
Khalwale responded to his critics in a bid to save face and the ‘wheelbarrow’ narrative, he explained that a wheelbarrow is a symbol of work representing the dignity of labor.
“Upon graduation today my dota is receiving congratulations from a growing number of Kenyans. Some are going ahead & advising that I immediately give her a wheelbarrow.
I pray that their wish be granted! A wheelbarrow is a symbol of work representing the dignity of labour,” Khalwale tweeted.
