Saddest Day In Football: Disbelief Over The Tragic Death Of A 17-Year-Old Prospect

Date:

The football world is in disbelief after Canary Island club UD Las Palmas announced the tragic death of a promising 17-year-old player who drowned in a canal in the southwest Spain

The Las Palmas starlet alongside his 15-year-old – Sanchez Vaca suffered a fatal accident in the province of Badajoz where Vaca had relatives, after getting caught in some piping while they were swimming in the waters.

The emergency services did not succeed in reviving the pair when they were salvaged from the water.

The youngster played in the youth ranks for UD Las Palmas and was about to resign for the club after spending a successful season at UD Jandia on the neighboring island of Fuerteventura.

Sanchez Vaca also reportedly caught the attention of Segunda Division side Girona

“UD Las Palmas are deeply saddened by the death of our former academy player Jorge Sánchez Vaca who, coming from UD Jandía de Fuerteventura, had planned to join our Under-19s next season,” Las Palmas said in a statement.

“We send our condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace.”

The club’s first-team players held a minute of silence for Vaca before they began their training session on Sunday.

Vaca’s current club wrote in a statement: “One of the saddest days in our club’s history, we don’t have the words to describe the pain which has overcome us in these moments.”

The death of the footballer will cast a shadow over Las Palmas’ return to action. The club is due to fly to Albecete for their fourth game since the restart of the Spanish second division football.
