A contingent of police officers are said to have raided the rural home of Kisii deputy governor Joash Maangi on Monday morning following a tip off that the home was housing some election materials.
It is alleged that over 10 police officers, without a search warrant, stormed Maangi’s homestead to find ballot papers that had allegedly been hidden in the home.
At the time, Maangi was in Kisii town training their agents just hours before the voting exercise begins.
“I was here in the morning training our agents. I was informed that over 15 police officers in uniform and others in civilian, went to my home. They found my brother and told him that they had been sent to collect ballot papers that had been hidden there,” Maangi told journalists.
According to him, the police searched two of his houses without his authorities but did not get whatever they were looking for.
Maangi rushed home but found that the officers in question had already left. He reported the incident at Ugembo police station.
“I questioned the OCS if he had sent police to my home but he said he had not done so. The OCPD also said that they had not sent any police officers. I don’t know if they were police officers or thugs, but I believe they were police officers because they were in uniform,” Maangi said.
He however called upon national security agencies to desist from intimidating, blackmailing and harassing him.
The incident has been condemned by several UDA leaders.
