It seems the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) boss Wafula Chebukati has been cornered by the deepstate following the arrest of three foreigners at the Jomo Kenyatta international airport.
In a statement by the IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati on Friday evening, the electoral commission faulted the state saying the move will affect the preparation of the coming polls.
Chebukati even confessed that the state had gone ahead to secure the passwords from the three Venezuelans that were arrested at JKIA, a move which has left many Kenyans wondering whether there was malice.
“The National Police Service has, most importantly, confiscated all electronic items including mobile phones, laptops and flash disks in the custody of the said personnel which electronic items contain important and sensitive information relating to the forthcoming elections as well as projects undertaken by them for other countries. The said personnel were compelled to give passwords to the confiscated phones and gadgets resulting in violations of rights of privacy,” Chebukati said in a statement.
However, the move to arrest and corner these three Venezuelans has not gone well with not only Chebukati but also with the Kenya Kwanza side which have come out guns blazing to defend suspicious activities by the electoral commission.
Constitutionally, foreigners are not allowed to walk with sensitive election materials in their private luggage and it beats logic why Ruto’s side and Wafula Chebukati are blaming the government for taking action against the three Venezuelans.
According to political analysts, the deepstate through intelligence seems to have been monitoring the activities of these individuals and it was just a matter of time before they were busted with the election materials at JKIA. In fact, if the Chebukati led commission was planning to play monkey games in this coming election then their goose has been cooked since they have been properly cornered by the state.
Other Kenyans are even wondering why Ruto and his team are in panic mode since they ought to support the state for arresting foreigners walking with vital election materials left right and center like their personal belongings.
“I am shocked that Ruto and his team are bashing the state for arresting 3 Venezuelans in possession of election materials which should not be the case. Were they to benefit from that act or what is really paining our Tangatanga brothers? Election is a matter on national security and there is nothing wrong with our officers arresting suspicious individuals walking with sensitive election materials like oranges in the market.” Said Vincent Kinuthia.
