Gospel singer Roy Smith Mwatia aka Rufftone is among those who have expressed interest in Nairobi senatorial seat.
The artist revealed his interest in joining politics in an interview with Churchill in November 2021 and in January this year, he officially joined DP William Ruto’s camp and has been accompanying the second in command in some of his campaign trips.
In an interview with TV47, the Tsinyanga Tsiwere hitmaker said that he will be vying under UDA ticket despite DP Ruto being associated with corruption because there is nobody who is perfect.
“Show me the holiest politician in Kenya and I will work with them. I am telling you the truth. There is no one who is perfect,” Rufftone said.
He also said that UDA’s bottom-up economic approach resonates with his life and that’s why joined the political affiliation.
“The decision to work with UDA was as a result of looking for a party that actually resonates with their manifesto. I was raised from a village and I have seen God raising me throughout my career up to where I am at right now.
“So basically kutoka chini kwenda juu. I was looking for a party that resonates with my story and I think UDA does that. It is focusing on more on those walio chii na Mungu anawapeleka juu,”Rufftone said.
He further said that he is going for the senatorial position because he is an activist and he hates injustices.
“The Senate is the only legislative office that defends the weak. It dwells on legislation and implementation of the devolution so for me am going to be the watchdog making sure that the young people get what they deserve, the women and the children,” the singer said
Rufftone added that he will be contesting in Nairobi because he has grown up in the city and that it is easier to work from Nairobi.
“Am a hybrid politician. I was raised in both Nairobi and upcountry but it is easier to work from Nairobi and I think once you hit Nairobi well, other leaders will duplicate what you have done and will follow suit,” Rufftone explained.
