Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio La Umoja movement, has given the Kenya Kwanza government a 14-day deadline to meet Jeevanjee’s meeting demands.
During a prayer gathering on Wednesday, Raila Odinga stated that all they want is electoral justice from the 2022 general election outcome and Kenyans to be cushioned from the current tough living standards.
“We came here as seekers of truth and defenders of justice. We are seekers and defenders of electoral justice, social and economic justice. We pray that this may be firmly planted in the soils of our country,” says the former Prime Minister.
Raila demands President William Ruto and his government must lower the prices of basic needs and taxes within 14 days.
He warned if this is not done, the opposition will hold anti-government protests.
“We’ve talked about the rising cost of basic commodities like unga, electricity, fuel, sugar and milk among others for far too long. We have complained about rising taxes and talked about children dropping out of school for lack of fees,” Raila further adds.
With the exit of former President Uhuru Kenyatta from power, subsidies have since been removed, making prices of basic commodities extremely high.
“Withdrawal of subsidies to food and education in the middle of drought and famine was reckless and heartless. Consequently, the subsidies must be restored, and the cost of basic commodities and taxes must come down in the next 14 days,” Raila said.
The ODM commander also demanded that the IEBC server be opened and that an audit be performed by a reputable firm.
“If that fails, we will lead the people to reclaim their authority and voice,” he said.
He also stated that the ongoing process of rebuilding the IEBC must be stopped instantly and a nonpartisan team formed to reorganize the electoral body in a way that ends is transparent and just.
