President Uhuru Kenyatta criticized international press as went on to reveal why he stopped watching news on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera and others.
Speaking during a conference in London, Uhuru stated that international media are biased as they always try to portray a bad image of Africa.
The Kenyan president noted that international press use negative events happening in a particular African country to make general assumptions about the whole continent.
Giving an example of CNN, BBC,Sky News and Al Jazeera, Uhuru said their journalists report on events unfolding in eastern Africa or even as far as West Africa while they are based in Nairobi.
“We have this perception problem unfortunately created by the media. Every single day it’s the negative aspects of Africa that are brought out there. I keep telling people you know, sometime you watch news – which i have stopped watching – and you find Al Jazeera, CNN, Sky, BBC whichever one you flip to. So they are talking about something that has happened in Rwanda, in South Sudan, in Ethiopia, in Somalia and friend even as far away as Nigeria on the other side of the continent… and then when the guy is signing off ‘this is John White reporting from Nairobi, Kenya’,” said president Uhuru which made the audience laugh out loud.
He added that;
“Now you are like… So everybody now the things that stick in their minds is Nairobi, Kenya is where Boko Haram lives and thrives you know. It’s where there is hunger and starvation, is where is I don’t know because it’s always ‘reporting from Nairobi, Kenya’. The story is forgotten it’s just ‘Nairobi, Kenya’.”
President Uhuru insisted that each African country is unique in their own way and as such events happening in each nation shouldn’t be used to make general assumption about the whole continent.
“So I would like people to appreciate that as much as we seek African unity but each country is unique. And I believe Kenya is unique.”
