The National Parents Association has denied claims that parents are opposing the new education curriculum, Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).
Speaking while at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development during an engagement with Education stakeholders on the CBC, the NPA chair Nicholas Maiyo said that those who were complaining about CBC were not genuine parents.
“Those are not genuine parents… we are the genuine parents and we are in full support of the curriculum. Where will the seven million children in preprimary school go if the curriculum is suspended?” he posed.
Maiyo added that they will be moving to court to defend the new curriculum.
“Our concern is the judicial decision that could disrupt our children’s education…We will join the case as parents representing 10 million children in public primary schools,” Maiyo said.
Last week, LSK President Nelson Havi filed an application in court seeking the suspension of CBC.
He argued that the action by the Education Ministry to implement the new curriculum is unlawful and prejudicial to the future of the children of Kenya and ought to be halted.
The petitions seeks to stop CBC until the hearing and determination of the case, adding that this will prevent a further denial and violation and infringement of the rights of children to education and free and compulsory basic education by the government.
In the application, Havi wants the ministry of education to go back to the 8-4-4 education system.
Through a tweet, Havi revealed that he had decided to file an application to stop the implementation of CBC following complaints from parents, teachers and other education stakeholders.
“I have heard your cries parents, teachers and guardians. The education system in Kenya should not be expensive, inefficient and ineffective experiment with our children and their future as is our leadership,”Havi said.
CBC was rolled out in January 2019 Pre-Primary I and II and Grades 1, 2 and 3 in lower primary.
