Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has received massive support over his calls to have the government and HELB release funds to students.
According to the lawmaker, together with university students, they will be staging a mother of all demonstrations on Thursday next week over the delays in releasing HELB money to students thus making their lives difficult.
“Release HELB to COMRADES or WE Release on you. Comrades to prepare for mega Demonstrations across the country next week on THURSDAY should TREASURY and HELB refuse to Disburse MONEY to the University students. Students are dying of Hunger,” Baby said on Facebook accompanied by a video explaining what students should arm themselves with when time comes.
In the video Babu issued a warning to the Treasury CS and HELB CEO Charles Ringera over their refusal to give money to students.
“Without HLB, a comrade can not go to class, buy food, afford accommodation and even sleep. With that as it may, we have decided that on Thursday next week we are giving them an ultimatum of at most 7 days we shall be holding a mother of all demonstrations, all roads will be closed,” Babu said.
He urged all universities in counties to demonstrate so as to send a strong message to the government for refusing to release HELB money to comrades.
“You send them to the university but you don’t want to give them the fees. Therefore, I urge all students in the whole nation to mobilize themselves in large numbers and ensure that this demonstration becomes a success,” the MP said.
Babu noted that the demonstrations will be peaceful and urged the policemen to be also peaceful.
“Let them not start rioting as usual and lobbying teargas at students to cause unnecessary unrest because an injury to one comrade is an injury to all comrades.
“From now on, drink water, because there is no food, just prepare and be light, get your rubber shoes, helmets and masks ready for the big day,” Babu advised.
His remarks have however been condemned and termed as an incitement to university students.
“Shida wewe huongea tu you have never tabled a bill in Parliament,” Eddie Musungu responded to Babu’s remarks.
Emasai Kamakia wrote, “Uchechezi tafuta zuluhu ya jambo sii mandamano.”
Others have lauded his remarks while thanking him for the effort in fighting for comrades rights while promising to elect him once again for another five-year term.
“Cheers Babu Owino, you talk this out of your heart because you were one of us, Helb supported you, Helb gave you hope, helb should be disbursed immediately,” Hillary Ojwang’ said.
“Babu thanks for being there for comrades…May God be with you,” Vincent Okelo said.
“Our incoming Baba,” Maureem small said while Robert Onyango wrote, “Ndiyo BABA wetu junior umesema ukweli. Strike tibim strike tial.”
