Phylis Ngirita, a suspect in the NYS graft scandal where Kshs791 million were reportedly stolen was sentenced to two days in jail.
Phylis Njeri Ngirita was sentenced to jail for skipping court sessions without valid reasons.
“The accused person will be detained for two days since she has a tendency of jumping bail without valid reasons. She will be remanded at Langata Women’s Prison,” Milimani senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi ruled on Wednesday.
The court issued a warrant of arrest against Ngirita when she failed to appear in Court on Monday for the second time.
Ngirita was to attend the hearing on the Kshs20 million tax evasion charge.
“I hereby issue a warrant of arrest against the accused and summons to the investigating officer and the accused to appear in court,” the magistrate said on Monday.
Ngirita was out on a bond of Kshs1 million and an alternative bail of Kshs1 million. She was freed in June 2018 by Justice Hedwig Ong’undi under strict bail conditions.
She was charged with four counts of failing to submit tax returns as required by the law under her enterprises, Njewanga. She however pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
