Not Yet Off The Hook! EACC Raids Waiguru’s Mansion

Date:

Troubles for Kirinyaga governor, Anne Waiguru seems to be far from ending as the EACC detectives raid her homes in Nairobi and Kirinyaga offices.

The anti-graft body said it was conducting investigations into allegations that Waiguru and other county government officials were irregularly paid travel allowances for Sh23 million.

According to CEO Twalib Mbarak the said amount of money was reportedly spent on non-existent trips.

“EACC is in the process of establishing whether the trips were undertaken and whether the documents were genuine,” Mbarak said.

According to the EACC they had the warrant from the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nyeri to search the homes of Governor Anne Waiguru.

“Our officers have been granted access to several offices and residences with a view of retrieving information that may be useful to the ongoing investigation,” Mbarak said.

The raids just a month after Members of County Assembly of Kirinyanga impeached Waiguru who was later reinstated by the senate.

During the hearing of her case at the Senate. Waiguru asked the senate committee to dismiss the case brought by the MCAs terming it trivial and full of innuendos.

While acquitting Waiguru, the Senate concluded that “there exists a well-orchestrated and complex web of corruption in the tendering process at the county government of Kirinyaga.”

The anti-graft body is said to be intending to scrutinize all the controversial procurement that has dogged Kirinyaga county.

“The interest payments that MCAs raised in their petition are the main issue that concerns her [Waiguru] though there are other issues,” source at the EACC told a local publication.

MCAs alleged that Waiguru was irregularly paid travel allowances amounting to Sh10.6 million “yet she did not make the trips”.

They also claimed that the governor presided over a corrupt and joint criminal enterprise by ensuring persons who had a close association with her presided over the evaluation and award of tenders.
