A 58-year old businessman from Kitale who shot a woman in July thinking she was the fugitive killer cop Carolyne Kagongo was found dead.
Kennedy Muyundo was discovered dead in his house at Kiminini, Trans Nzoia county on Tuesday night after he failed to show up at work. He was half naked and was lying on the floor of his bedroom.
The businessman ran Iroko hotels in Bungoma and Kitale towns and was facing charges of attempted murder.
Muyundo, a licensed gun holder, shot 20-year old Phanice Chemutai in July during the time when the search for Kagongo, who was on the run after killing two men in Thika and Nakuru, had heightened.
Speaking to the media, Muyundo’s mother, Florence Muyundo, said that she was called by employees of the businessman seeking to establish his whereabouts.
“It was around 7am yesterday when one of the hotel staff called me seeking to establish the whereabouts of Kennedy who had not reported to his workplace and was not picking phone calls,” the 74-year old said.
She went to check on her son at his home and found that the door had been locked from inside.
She alerted neighbors and with their assistance, they broke one of the doors and gained entry.
“It was then that I stumbled on the lifeless and half-naked body of my son lying on the floor of the bedroom,” Florence said.
At the time of his death, the businessman who is married and has three children was alone at home.
“The wife, Vivian, is away in the USA where she had taken their last born to join his sibling who has been living there since 2019,” Florence said.
Florence resides in Nairobi and only travelled home last week, She said that her son was sick for a while and was on medication
“My son has been sick for some time. He first tested positive for Covid-19 before developing a blood clot problem; that’s the reason I have been around to check on him,
“Since the shooting incident which occurred here at Kiminini market, my son has never been the same again but has been experiencing frequent moments of stress,” Florence said.
County Criminal Investigations Officer Francis Kihara said that preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased arrived home on Tuesday at around 12.30 am.
“Assorted drugs and juice were recovered from the bedroom and will aid the investigation officers establish the possible cause of the death,” Kihara said.
Those who saw him during the last moments of his life said that the businessman had been in a good mood at a popular club on Monday evening and even bought drinks for everyone.
His body was moved to Cherengany Nursing Home mortuary as police continue with investigations to establish the cause of his death.
