Murang’a Residents Destroy Government Project Worth Millions For Posing Health Risk

Date:

A government irrigation project worth Kshs263 million at  Kanjama village in Mathioya sub county, Muranga has been destroyed.

Angry residents resolved to drain water from the Mukuru wa Nyagathanga Water Project that had stalled  for posing a health risk since it had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The residents said they took the action as they did not want the National Irrigation Authority to help in draining the water since they have been complaining about the issue for months but no action was taken. They said that the government only intervened when the issue was publicized.

“This project has caused a lot of suffering to us. Mosquitoes have become too common and denied us peace since we cannot sleep,” a local said.

According to the locals, malaria-related infections had risen amongst them while noting that before the project commenced, only a few cases were recorded.

They called upon the government and well-wishers to help them get mosquito nets as most of them were ailing.

The locals, through their Member of County Assembly, said that they would head to court to compel the government to re-evaluate the health risk that is posed by the construction of the water project.
