Mt. Kenya Foundation leaders have said that they have not settled on a preferred candidate for the 2022 presidential elections.
During a meeting with One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principals on Thursday October 7, the leaders through their chair Dr. Peter Munga said that they will settle on a candidate who will take care of the group’s interests.
“We are business people. We are also agriculturalists. We trade with our crops. We trade with anything that is sellable at a profit as long it is okay with the government of the day,” Munga said.
He added that Mt. Kenya voters are looking for someone who will let business people conduct their businesses in any part of the country.
He further criticized politicians who have been referring to the youth as the poor and asked them to send them a message of hope instead.
“What the young ones need is to know that there is hope. Do not remind the youth that they are poor. In Mt Kenya, we don’t believe anybody is poor, particularly when he is young,” Munga said.
The foundation plays a key role in every electioneering period as it helps to mobilize funds to support presidential candidates from the region.
Last month, the group endorsed Raila Odinga’s presidential candidature during the September 25 meeting.
According to reports, the group will be holding a series of meetings with prospective presidential candidates in the Uhuru succession politics before settling on their preferred candidate.
It has however been reported that the group does not intend to meet the Deputy President William Ruto who is also in the race for the presidential seat. The reason as to why the decision was reached remain unclear.
The group will settle on their preferred candidate after completing a series of engagements with OKA leaders.
