A weighbridge officer has been confirmed dead while a police officer is nursing serious injuries after being rammed over by a speeding lorry.
The police officer was part of a team deployed to axle load regulations along the Nyeri- Nanyuki Road.
During the operation, they stopped the said lorry but the driver disobeyed the order and failed to stop. They then engaged the driver and tried to stop him at the Brookside area.
However, the driver disobeyed for the second time and rammed over two vehicles that were pursuing him. In the process, he also ran over a weighbridge officer who died on the spot from multiple serious body injuries sustained.
“Sergent Ezekiel Rangera Kayongi sustained injuries on his right leg and right hand and was rushed to Mathiari Mission Hospital for treatment,” the police statement read in part.
“The scene was processed and the body of the deceased was moved to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem,” it added.
Other weighbridge officers who were on the scene escaped unhurt but the vehicles used in the operation were badly damaged following the impact.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the driver who escaped after the tragic incident.
