Married Church Bishop In Trouble For Preying On His Congregant

A Nairobi ACK Bishop is in trouble over claims of sexually harassing a woman by touching her inappropriately.

Bishop Joel Waweru was arraigned before Kibera senior principal magistrate Derrick Kuto and was charged with sexually assaulting a woman by touching her breasts and attempting to kiss her without consent.

He however pleaded not guilty to the charges related to sexual assault.  The offences are said to have been committed on different dates and times in Lang’ata within Nairobi since 2018.

According to the charge sheet, Waweru, being a person in authority, persistently made sexual advances to the woman who was identified as JNM with knowledge that she did not welcome such advances.

He was accused of touching J.N.M’s breast indecently on July 13, 2021.

The court was told that the victim was demoted from being a parish vicar and the archdiocesan at a church she was serving, to a vicar and later transferred to a different church and her salary deducted.

According to the police report, the woman complained that the bishop embarrassed her several times by asking her to deny allegations that he was demanding sex from her before congregants.

She also narrated an incident where the bishop attempted to kiss her while in his office before his wife walked in but she did not notice what had transpired.

The report further says that the Bishop is obsessed with her. He told her that she is beautiful and that he liked her even though she is also married.

She now feels  embarrassed, emotionally frustrated and feeling insecure.

The accused was released on a bond of Kshs50,000 and the case will be mentioned in court in two weeks’ time.
