Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera will be the chief guest during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kenya.
The Malawian President will be accompanied by his wife Mrs. Monica Chakwera. This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will be the 58th since Kenya gained her self-rule status.
The Mashujaa Day celebrations will be held at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga County, on Wednesday, 20th October 2021.
The celebrations are held every year to commemorate the struggle of Kenya’s patriots during the colonial war.
The statement from the State House confirmed that the Malawian leader will be in the country on Tuesday, for a three-day state visit, and he will be hosted by his Kenyan counterpart President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“His Excellency Hon. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi will arrive in the country on Tuesday, 19th October 2021, for a three-day State Visit of the Republic of Kenya. His Excellency President Lazarus Chakwera – who will be accompanied by Her Excellency Mrs. Monica Chakwera, the First Lady of the Republic of Malawi – will be the Chief,” said State House spokesperson Kanze Dena Mararo.
There have been ugly political posturing pitting Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, who will be the host, against the County’s Women Rep Ngirici over whose picture should be on the billboard which stands at the road to welcome guests who will be attending the celebrations.
Each of the two leaders thought that their picture should be on the billboard. The tug of only subsided when the Interior Principal Secretary weighed in and decided on whose picture to appear on the billboard in favor of the county’s governor Waiguru.
This year’s celebration is going to be the last one to be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The head of state has been in charge of the country since 2013 and will be exiting the stage next year in August.
Last year, the country did not celebrate the day as it has been the norm – since many programs were disrupted by the Covid-19 menace.
